Summary

ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen
King-who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer—takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the
possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that
changed their lives, and one essay blows him away-a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning's father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his
brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life-like Harry's, like America’s in 1963—turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns
the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession-to prevent the Kennedy
assassination.

So begins Jake's new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of
Derry, Maine (where there's Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner
named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

  1. Goodreads Review, Review by Blythe

WOW! Holy crap! This book was amazing, and is my 3rd favorite book by Stephen King... I was so worried about what the ending would be, and I had a feeling I knew what it would be, but, that ending was great... It left everything wrapped up nicely, and was one of his better endings; it made me smile,...

It was nice to read a current book for once... and not just a YA current book... I keep pretty up to date with those.
I love time travel, and I enjoy Stephen King. Sometimes though, I wonder if he writes these really big books because he's pressured to do so. You know, It, The Stand, et...

Another amazing story by Uncle Stevie. I admit that I don't know much about history, but I was immediately immersed in this book! The time period alone, intrigued me. I could have happily stayed there and been very happy!

Wow. This book is a mess on so many levels I'm not sure where to even begin. First, it's a damn shame that King chose to take what could have been an interesting story centered around the Kennedy assassination and turn it into nothing more than a liberal lovefest worshipping all that is Kennedy an...

Thank you, Steve. You were wrong all those years ago when you said you weren't very good at writing about love and intimacy. The love story here is full of honesty and tenderness. When I got to the last couple of pages, I was crying so hard I couldn't read.

What did I think? I think I lost a weekend and there is no way to go back in time to get it because I don't know where the rabbit hole is! But would I? Would I change having read this book? No way!

I was a huge Stephen King fan in high school and gobbled up all of his books. Until ... ...

  10. Goodreads Review, Review by Rick

It's no mystery that I am a rabid King fan, and have been ever since I read Salem's Lot way back in 1975. Each new book holds the promise of another singularly well-told tale filled with suspense, terror, and a sardonic wit. Does he have his duds? Absolutely...witness The Tommyknockers, The Dark Hal...
